Football:
All season long, the high-flying St. Francis offense, led by Max Garrison, gets most of the headlines and publicity.
And in almost every case, deseredly so.
But in Friday’s 28-14 victory at Chaparral in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs, you have to tip your cap to the Golden Knights’ defense.
The SFHS ‘D’ not only held the Pumas to half their weekly scoring average, they shut Chaparral out in the second half, and did so some 87 miles from home.
Hunter Roddy got Chaparral out to a 7-0 lead when rumbled in from 1 yard out.
St. Francis got even when its junior quarterback, Jack Jacobs, answered with a 1-yard TD of his own.
Jacobs would then connect with Dylan Bell in the second quarter on a 55-yard TD pass to give the Golden Knights a 14-7 lead.
Chaparral would catch SFHS when Devyne Pearson sprinted in from 74 yards out.
But Max Garrison’s 2-yard TD run before the half gave St. Francis a 21-14 lead that the Golden Knights defense would make stand up.
Jack Jacobs put the game away when his 2-yard TD run with 8:11 to play gave St. Francis a 28-14 lead.
Up next: The Golden Knights will host La Serna next Friday for a spot in the D-4 title game.
The Lancers (11-2) defeated Lawndale, 24-20, in their Friday night quarterfinal showdown with the Cardinals.
