Boys Athlete of the Week:
When Bonita and Ayala met up on Friday in Chino Hills, both programs knew the winner of that night would clinch at least a share of the Mountain West League championship.
And there was one guy that did more than anyone else to make sure his program won, and his name is Chandler Carthan.
Carthan had 14 tackles in Ayala’s 35-14 victory over visiting Bonita, including 1.5 sacks.
The Bulldogs’ linebacker had three tackles for loss and recovered a fumble in the third quarter.
But his biggest impact on Friday night was picking off Daniel Andrade, one of the SGV’s best quarterbacks, twice.
Late in the first quarter, Carthan picked Andrade and brought it back 52 yards for a TD, but a block in the back penalty after the interception negated the TD.
And with approximately two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Carthan again intercepted a Bonita pass, and this time, his 14-yard pick-six counted.
Up next: the Bulldogs (8-1, 2-0) can clinch the outright MWL title with a victory on Friday at Charter Oak (5-4, 0-2).
