Football:
There isn’t a week-nine game within the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone that has more on the line than Bonita at Charter Oak.
The Bearcats and Chargers enter the contest with identical 8-0 records overall and 3-0 in Sierra League games.
With two games to play in the regular season, the winner of Friday night’s showdown in Covina will secure at least a share of the Sierra League championship.
They match up so evenly statistically that Calpreps has projected BHS will leave COHS with a narrow 28-26 victory.
However, a computer algorithm won’t decide this monumental matchup, the boys in either the green or blue uniforms will.
Bonita has advantages in points scored (301-296), least points allowed (65-82), total offense (399-380) and passing yards (244-181).
Charter Oak rushes for 199 yards per game as compared to 155 for the Bearcats.
BHS (132nd) is 22 spots higher than COHS in the most recent MaxPreps state rankings.
It goes without saying that both teams are loaded with talent and they’re well coached.
Bonita quarterback Isaiah Guerrero took over the reins of the offense in week six after transferring from Los Osos, and the Bearcats have scored 129 points or 43 per game.
He’s completed 54-of-71 for 732 yards.
Guerrero has tossed 11 TDs and only one interception.
Guerrero also has the ability to break free with his legs when the situation calls for it.
Charter Oak’s Dutch Burbidge has had an MVP-quality season.
Burbidge only had to sit out one game after escaping the Titanic known as the Pasadena High School football program.
He led PHS to a CIF-SS championship just two years ago.
In 2026, Burbidge has completed 71-of-115 for 1,264 yards.
He’s tossed 20 TDs and five picks.
Burbidge also has 239 rushing yards and six TDs.
Joseph Lara leads the BHS ground game with 647 yards on 53 carries.
He’s scored 10 rushing TDs, and has four receptions for 31 yards and one TD.
Sebastian Vasquez has been a solid 1-2 punch with Lara, rushing for 466 yards and a pair of TD runs.
Xavion Flournoy has totaled 196 yards on 14 carries and two scores for the Chargers.
BJ Quiliza and Chase Martin have been Burbidge’s two favorite targets through week eight.
Quiliza has 22 receptions for 463 yards and six TDs, and Martin has tallied 412 receiving yards on 21 catches and six TDs of his own.
Elias Jauregui has been an effective weapon for COHS with 15 receptions for 273 yards and six scores.
Matt Milazzo leads the BHS receiving corps with 26 catches for 319 yards and seven TDs.
Carter Mann has reeled in 15 passes for 329 yards and three TDs.
Omari Sullivan (17-for-282 & 4 TDs) and Dane Gosserand (15-for-200 & 1 TD) have played a significant role in the Bearcats success through the air.
The Bonita ‘D’ has surrendered just 65 points all season or eight per game.
Ace Guilar has 40 tackles and a pair of picks.
Joseph Lara is second in tackles with 34 and Isaiah Lazarus has 33.
Trey Harvey leads the way for the Bearcats with three interceptions, while Ryder Grosenbach and Matt Mijares have two picks apiece.
Levi Gregorich and Matt Mijares have a team-high four sacks apiece.
Charter Oak allows approximately 10 points per game.
Dom Campos has 36 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Isaac Oton is second with 32 tackles.
Julian Minor leads both teams with five sacks.
The Bearcats and Chargers have two common opponents.
BHS has defeated Colony and Ayala by a combined margin of 89-14, and COHS outscored the Titans and Bulldogs, 66-13.
The kickoff is slated for 7.
