Tennis:
Today’s encounter with Valley Christian had the makings of a great matchup, with the winner taking the lead for the Olympic League’s second and final automatic berth in the CIF-SS playoffs.
Both teams knew what was at stake entering today’s match, each preparing themselves for a tight match.
However, that anticipation was diminished when Maranatha’s lineup was compromised for the second time in as many weeks due to illness of a top player.
Despite the last-minute news, the Lady Minutemen vowed to stick together to try to defy the odds.
But the hill was too steep to climb for the young squad, who fielded seven underclassmen today.
Singles standouts, Sarah Fong and Hannah Su, fought hard to keep Maranatha within striking distance, winning two sets apiece.
It wasn’t for lack of effort, but the doubles squad couldn’t overcome the experience of the Defenders and finished with only one victory, courtesy of Jennifer Chu/Peony Liu.
The Lady Minutemen (7-4 overall, 1-3 in league) hope to get healthy in time to make one final push next week, the final one of the regular season.
They travel to Whittier Christian on Tuesday, then host Valley Christian on Thursday.
