Football:

Things are looking good for the Alta Loma football program.

The Lions are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Valle Vista League games after Friday’s 35-0 victory at Los Osos.

The defending VVL champs will face winless Diamond Ranch next week, and they’ll finish with Chino and Claremont before entering the postseason.

Through the first seven games, the ALHS defense has allowed just 60 points, and 37 of those came in a week-two loss to a talented Etiwanda program out of the Baseline League.

Five of their six wins have come by double digits or more, and the Lions expect to get their two-way star Bryant Avila back in the final week of the regular season or the first round of the playoffs.

The individual stats aren’t nearly what they could be, because it’s rare for starters to play all four quarters thanks to outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 197-60.

Sophomore quarterback Maximus Fierro continues to carry himself with a calmness and intelligence beyond his years.

On Friday, Fierro accounted for four touchdowns, including three through the air.

Fierro got the Lions on the board with a 33-yard TD run in the first quarter.

He’d go on to toss scoring strikes to Santiago Vasquez (25 yards), Devon White (31) and Owen Lyons (7).

Izaih Brown scored on a 33-yard run in the 14-point third quarter.

Up next: ALHS travels to winless Diamond Ranch and LOHS visits Claremont.

Quotable:

ALHS quarterback, Maximus Fierro: “We’re 6-1 heading into our third league game this week. We’d obviously like to be 7-0, but 6-1 still feels pretty good. We’ve dealt with some key injuries this season which had guys miss some time, and one of our best weapons Bryant Avila is still working to come back. We also had to wait five games for some of our sit-out period guys to be able to play with us. The downside of that is, we haven’t played a game where we’ve been at full power. The positive is, it’s given some guys opportunities to step up and show what they can do. I’m proud of the way our guys have stepped up in those roles and are getting better every week. Guys like Devon White, Semaj Stewart, Owen Lyons who are mainly defensive backs, are all guys lining up in the first group of receivers. And with how much those guys have grown on offense, I’d feel comfortable lining up against any defense. A lot of credit should go to our coaches for getting those guys ready and not changing our standard of what they expect in guys in those roles. Coach Perri always says not to look too far ahead, only focus on the next game, and that’s definitely what I try to do. But I can’t help but think we have to keep fighting to secure a postseason opportunity and make our season long enough for those guys who are injured right now to have a chance at playing again this season. I’m excited to show the world what Alta Loma football looks like at full power.”
