Football:

Isaiah Guerrero got his first opportunity to lead the Bonita offense on Thursday night.

Guerrero had to sit out the first five games since transferring to La Verne from Los Osos High School.

And man, the dude wearing No. 17 in the green jersey sure made the most of it.

Guerrero credited Evan Robbins, who did a competent job through the first five games, and he had the Bearcats at 5-0.

The senior signal caller was sharp as could be, and he spread the wealth in a 35-0 victory over visiting Colony.

It was the Sierra League opener for both programs.

Guerrero accounted for four of the five BHS touchdowns, including three through the air.

Late in the first quarter, Guerrero tossed a 37-yard TD pass to Levi Gregorich.

Guerrero scored on a 17-yard TD run at 8:41 of the second quarter to give BHS a 14-0 lead.

With just under eight minutes to play in the third period, Bonita’s game changer, Joseph Lara, sprinted into the east end zone from 75 yards out to extend the Bearcats advantage to 21-0.

Matt Milazzo reeled in a 24-yard third-quarter TD from Guerrero.

And Carter Mann, who always seems to make the most of his opportunities, closed out the scoring with an 86-yard TD catch.

Mann finished with 141 yards on four catches.

Up next: The Bearcats travel to Covina District Field next Friday to battle Northview.

The Vikings (2-4, 0-1) fell, 31-27, at CDF to their visitors from Glendora.

Quotable:

Bonita quarterback, Isaiah Guerrero: “I was making sure that I was comfortable with my team. My coaches put me in the right position, and I just took advantage of the opportunities that I was given. I want to give a lot of credit to my offensive line. They made it possible for me and the program to be successful tonight. Playing at Bonita means a lot to me. I am so happy they supported and embraced me. I wasn’t nervous for my first start. I was ready. I was also happy to be able to spread the ball around. We have a lot of talent on this team. Our team played lights out and made it a special night for me. Evan played well at quarterback before me, and he’s a great teammate. We continue to push each other to be the best we can be.”
