After his highly successful tennis career was over, tennis legend, Brad Gilbert, authored the best-selling book, Winning Ugly.
“Winning ugly” refers to finding a way to win when you are not playing well and your game is not at its smoothest or prettiest.
Playing their third match in three days, and in warm conditions, the Lady Minutemen were tired and certainly not at their smoothest or prettiest.
Yet, they found a way to fight through the aches, pains, and fatigue; enough to “win ugly” today and secure a sweep of Alhambra, Pasadena, and Monrovia this week.
The player that seemed least affected by the week’s schedule was Sarah Fong, who achieved the rare “triple bagel” in sweeping her opponents, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
It capped off an impressive 9-0 week for Fong, both firsts in her career.
Other milestones today include the first high school victories in the careers of Catherine Hayes, Chloe Soh, and Hannalee Trout, as well as the first two-win day for Trout.

Up next: The Lady Minutemen, now 3-1, get a needed break until next Thursday, when they host defending CIF-SS Division 6 champions and reigning Olympic League champions, Village Christian, in their league opener.
