Football:

The University of La Verne football team didn’t serve as the most gracious host on Saturday.

They welcomed an Azusa Pacific University program that hadn’t played a game since November 16th of 2019.

And to say the Cougars offense was a tad rusty might be an understatement.

ULV cruised to a 30-3 season-opening victory after holding Azusa Pacific to just 116 yards of total offense.

Trailing 9-0 with 11 minutes to play in the third quarter, the La Verne punter dropped the snap at the 1-yard line.

After losing a few yards, Tyler Nolan converted a 20-yard field goal for APU’s lone score of the game.

Through the first three quarters, the Leopards only offense came from Jacob Cuevas who booted fields goals of 23, 27 and 27 yards.

Early in the fourth quarter, Jimmy Rumsey caught a 23-yard TD pass from Jordan Hernandez to expand the ULV lead to 16-3.

Trevon Kenney picked a pass and brought it back 49 yards for a score.

And Tyler McCown’s 12-yard TD run with 3:13 to play capped the scoring on Saturday.

ULV had advantages in first downs (22-6), rushing yards (160-88), passing (148-28), total offense (308-116) and time of possession (36-24).

Jordan Hernandez completed 13-of-20 for 110 yards, and he gained 86 yards on 16 carries.

McCown carried the ball 19 times for 103 yards, and he had four receptions for 15 yards.

Noah Allen led ULV with five catches for 57 yards.

Kasey Gillis totaled 39 receiving yards on four catches.

Rumsey finished with three catches for 33 yards.

Salvatore Felice (8) and Chase Yanez (7) combined for 15 tackles in the win.

Three APU quarterbacks combined to go 4-for-18 for 28 yards with two picks and no TDs.

Miguel Larios was 3-of-6 for 24 yards and one interception.

Demarion Wright (4-for-30) and Aaron Mitchell (6-for-23) combined to gain 53 yards on 10 carries for the Cougars.

Tyron Bates had half of APU’s four receptions for 24 yards.

Kayvion Jones (10), Keanu Kuma (9), Aldo Olweny (8) and Curlee Kirkpatrick (7) combined for 33 tackles in the loss.

Up next: The Cougars and Leopards both have next week off before their second games on September 19th.
