Boys Athletes of the Week:
Since Mark Carson took over the Rio Hondo Prep football program in 2017, no San Gabriel Valley area team has won more games (88), had a higher winning percentage (83%) or claimed more CIF-SS titles (3).
Over that stretch, the Kares were known for running the ball down an opponent’s throat, having at least a couple elite athletes that could break an 80-yard TD run at any time and completely owning the time of possession battle.
It helped lead the program to CIF-SS Division 9, 7 and 5 titles in 2023, 2024 and 2025, respectively.
This year, however, RHP will win more games on the defensive side of the ball.
To add stock to that claim, consider the fact that Rio Hondo Prep opponents have held the ball for 16 more minutes in 2026.
And through the first eight quarters of 2026, the Kares ‘D’ hasn’t allowed a single point in victories over Schurr (35-0) and Troy (7-0).
Rio Hondo Prep has allowed just 313 yards of total offense through the first two games.
Two nights ago, and with zero room for error, RHP’s defense allowed Troy just two trips in the red zone.
They just happened to be the final drive of each half for the Warriors.
The first ended with a turnover on downs, as the Kares allowed just three total yards on four plays.
And Elias Har’s pick in the north end zone ended any THS chances of sending the game to overtime.
It’s a rare evening when three separate RHP players have double digit tackle totals, but that was the case on Friday.
It’s an even rarer occasion when athletes on the defensive side of the ball get highlighted for their success.
And that is why Troy Seto, Nathaniel Riley and Aiden Delgadillo have been named the 210 Prep Sports Boys Athletes of the Week.
Riley led the way with 12 tackles, while Troy Seto and Aiden Delgadillo had 10 tackles apiece to pace the Kares defensive effort.
Through the first two games, Delgadillo leads the way with 19 tackles and a pair of sacks.
Riley has 19 tackles as well.
And Seto has tallied 13 tackles through week one.
Up next: The Kares visit Quartz Hill next Friday at 7.
