Baseball:

It took two days to get there, but Glendora secured its first CIF State So Cal Regional playoff win in program history.

On Tuesday, the Tartans welcomed Culver City to their field, and they went home trailing 11-10 in the bottom of the 13th with Tanner Grable on first and Santiago Garza at the plate and no out.

Fast forward to Wednesday at 4, and the Centaurs made the 34-mile drive back to GHS and they left the SGV with a season-ending setback.

Garza beat out a chopper to short for an infield single and Glendora had the potential tying and winning runs on base.

Sebastian Lawrence doubled in Grable to tie the game at 11-11.

And with runners on second and third, Aidan Yamazaki singled in the game-winning run in the Tartans’ 12-11 CIF State Southern California Regional Division 3 victory over CCHS.

The game featured 23 combined runs, 35 hits and 10 pitchers.

Glendora narrowly out-hit Culver City, 18-17, however, the Tartans had an 8-2 advantage in extra-base hits.

CCHS and GHS each scored 10 runs in the first six innings and then neither plated a runner until the 13th.

Jordan Espino went 4 1/3 innings, and he was charged with seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, a walk and three hit batters.

Teven Davis provided 3 2/3 innings of relief and he was saddled with three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Nolan Riesenberg allowed one run on four hits over four innings.

Riesenberg donated one walk and struck out four.

Nick Ramos was charged with the loss after allowing one run on three hits.

After four hours on Tuesday, the Tartans needed just six pitches on Wednesday to overcome the one-run deficit.

Sebastian Lawrence’s postseason magic has continued into the state playoffs.

The sophomore went 4-for-7 with three runs, a double, two home runs and six RBIs.

Riley Cooper drew a pair of walks, was hit by pitch, singled, doubled and scored.

John Seader, one of the area’s premier shortstops walked, was hit by pitch, singled and scored a pair of runs.

Tanner Grable went 3-for-6, was hit by pitch, doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Santiago Garza singled twice and scored three times.

Aidan Yamazaki went 3-for-6, was hit by pitch, scored and as mentioned, drove in the game-winning run.

Jude Garcia singled, had a pair of doubles and one RBI.

There were several heroes for GHS, but towards the top of the list has to be sophomore, Preston Tymchak.

Tymchak was the final of the six Tartans to pitch on Tuesday, and the only to go more than two innings.

He went six strong, allowing one run on four hits.

Tymchak didn’t issue a walk and registered two strikeouts.

Forty-one of his 53 pitches were strikes.

Nolan Riesenberg went 4-for-6 with a double, three runs and a pair of RBIs.

Matthew Riesenberg singled and scored.

Dawson Balthazar went 3-for-5 with a walk, double and two RBIs.

Saul Sandoval had three singles in six at-bats.

Blake Carbo walked, singled twice and scored three times.

Nick Ramos went 2-for-5 with a pair of walks, three runs and an RBI.

Vince Ferrier and Aaron Carrillo-Munoz both went 1-for-6 with one RBI apiece.

Up next: On Friday, the Tartans host No. 6 seeded Westview of San Diego in the D-3 semifinal at 4.

The Wolverines (27-6) secured a 7-1 victory at No. 3 Carson.

The winner of Friday’s GHS-WHS game will face Kaiser on Saturday in the D-3 final.

KHS defeated Helix, 7-5, in San Diego in their semifinal showdown.

GHS senior, Aidan Yamazaki: “I knew we were going to do everything to keep playing and we weren’t going down without a fight. We felt really good as the game resumed on Wednesday. It was good to be refreshed after a long couple of games. It also helped a lot that we didn’t have a long drive, and we got to play on our own field. We felt confident with Santi, Seb and Tanner at the plate, as they’re our top hitters. I had runners on second and third and I got a fastball and pulled it down the first-base line. It was a big relief to drive in that run and keep the season going. A big part of why we’re having this success is because we have every player on this team pulling in the same direction.”

GHS senior, Tanner Grable: “I got a fastball on a 3-and-2 count yesterday to lead off the bottom of the 13th. It was a seven-pitch at-bat, and I was late on a couple of fastballs. But I was able to single through the 3-4 hole. Everyone was kind of in shock, because we weren’t expecting the game to be postponed, but we understood. I had a good feeling as I went back to first today, because Santi and Sebastian have been the best two hitters in our lineup. Santiago beat out an infield single and Sebastian hit a double to left that scored me and gave us second-and-third with no outs. Aidan came up with the infield in, and he was able to single home the game-winning run and we’re excited to continue playing. I think our composure is a big reason we’re still playing.”

GHS junior, Santiago Garza: “The mood in the dugout was loud and exciting. I had a lot of confidence facing the new pitcher and I knew I could put something in play to help my team win. We were extremely excited to win and host another game. Our goal was to be together for a couple extra days, and just enjoy the few games we have left together.”

GHS sophomore, Sebastian Lawrence: “None of us had been a part of anything like that. It felt very weird because we prepared for two hours and it was over in less than five minutes. We felt confident coming back on Wednesday, and we knew we had the guys in place to get it done. I felt very good at the plate. My swing before the game felt good and my teammates gave me the opportunity. We have so many great competitors on our team, and it makes it more special. We just want to win. Preston flipped the entire mojo like he did at the CIF-SS finals and on Tuesday. He’s very confident in his stuff and I can’t say enough good things about him.”
