Baseball:
Covina fell short, 5-1, in the CIF-SS Division 6 title game to Brentwood, a team that sits 105 sports higher than the Colts in the current MaxPreps state rankings.
CHS, making its first trip to the CIF finals since 1988 put up a valiant fight, but a couple of errors and missed opportunities offensively were too costly to beat a quality Eagles’ program.
Covina’s season is not over.
They have elected to accept their invitation in next week’s CIF State playoffs with an opponent to be named shortly.
But back to the game.
Covina ace Donovan Johnson was charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Johnson issued five walks and registered four strikeouts.
Isaac Flores provided 1 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief in spite of hitting three BHS batters.
Flores didn’t allow a walk and struck out three.
He finished the week having gone seven scoreless innings against Lakewood and Brentwood.
Hudson Chase, the Eagles leading hitter walk, scored and tripled in a pair of runs in the third to give BHS a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Hayden Prince singled three times and scored.
Charlie Balsley and Miles Turner singled and scored one run apiece.
Sam Russakoff walked and scored.
Prince went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, and he allowed an unearned run on four hits and one hit batter.
Prince issued one walk and registered eight strikeouts.
Jack Kaplan got the final four outs without any damage.
He negotiated his way through the sixth and seventh with one walk and a pair of strikeouts on Saturday.
Ethan Echeverria walked and his RBI single in the bottom of the second gave Covina a 1-0 lead.
Isaac Flores doubled and scored.
Aaron Cordova walked and singled.
Aiden Ayala doubled and Kevin Mitchell singled for the Colts.
For the record, the young men at Covina carried themselves in a way that should make their school, program, Coach O’Leary, his staff and their families very proud.
Up next: The Colts have accepted a CIF State bid that begins on Tuesday with an opponent to be named shortly.
