Baseball:
After Friday’s 5-3 loss at last-place Rancho Cucamonga, the Chino Hills baseball program finished in a three-way tie with Upland and Los Osos for third place in the Baseline League standings.
The Huskies swept the Highlanders in the first round, while the Grizzlies took two of three versus CHHS.
UHS went 2-1 against LOHS.
And Chino Hills will enter the playoffs having lost eight of their last 10 games.
On Wednesday, Max Zaldivar was charged with three runs on five hits over four innings.
Zaldivar didn’t issue a walk and registered three strikeouts.
RCHS got to Nick Gonzalez for two runs on four hits over two innings of work.
Gonzalez didn’t allow a walk and fanned a pair of Cougars.
Trevor Newman had a two-run single in the bottom of the third, and he hit a two-run home run in the fifth.
Ethan Diaz singled twice and scored.
Rowan Suchanek singled in a run and scored.
Mason Sanchez had a pair of singles and scored.
Justin Stansbury and Jared Mock had one hit apiece for RCHS.
Mason Sanchez went two innings, and he was charged with one run on one hit.
Sanchez issued two walks and registered three strikeouts.
Stansbury was credited with the win after providing two innings of relief and allowing one run on three hits.
Stansbury walked one and fanned four CHHS batters.
Aydan Wheeler and Tanner Henne provided one scoreless and hitless inning apiece.
Malachi Allan surrendered a seventh inning run on two hits, and he struck out one.
Jayden Kim singled and doubled.
Brody Buoncristiani drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.
Anthony Medyn went 2-for-3 with a run, including an RBI single in the top of the first inning.
Jacob Jimenez singled in a run in the fourth to pull CHHS to within 3-2 of RCHS.
Taylor Pierson’s RBI single in the seventh allowed the Huskies to have the tying runs on base with no outs.
But Malachi Allan retired three consecutive batters to end the threat.
Up next: CHHS will get its playoff opponent on Saturday afternoon at 1.
