Baseball:
Donovan Johnson narrowly outlasted Jose Valadez on Wednesday.
Covina edged their visitor from Rowland, 3-2, in the first of a two-game Valle Vista League series.
The Colts improved to 3-1 in VVL games.
Johnson went the distance and surrendered two runs on five hits.
Johnson issued one walk and registered seven strikeouts.
Fifty-four of his 80 pitches were strikes.
David Garcia had a pair of doubles and scored both runs.
Rick Morrisseau singled in Garcia in the top of the second.
And Logan Dwyer’s RBI single in the fourth gave Rowland a 2-1 lead.
CJ Carrillo walked and singled.
Valadez went all six for the Raiders, allowing three runs on eight hits.
Valadez walked one and fanned three CHS batters.
Ethan Echeverria went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Kevin Mitchell singled, and trailing 2-1, his two-run HR in the bottom of the sixth drove in the eventual game winning runs.
Alexander Galaviz singled twice and scored.
Donovan Johnson and Isaac Flores singled, and Kaleb Bolton scored.
Up next: The Colts travel to Rowland on Friday.
