Tennis:

In their first match back from Easter break, Maranatha knew they had an opportunity to secure a CIF-SS playoff berth with a win against the Jaguars.

That task got easier when they discovered that the Jaguars’ top player was unavailable to play.

The Minutemen dominated play right out of the gate, taking five of six sets in the first round.

They duplicated that in the second round, securing the match and finishing the round with an insurmountable 10-2 lead.

The most exciting set of the day came in the third round, when No. 3 doubles Ben Forsyth/Sam Crisman prevailed in a dramatic 7-6(7) win after trailing the entire set.

The tiebreaker was a seesaw affair, with each team taking leads throughout and each holding set points, before pulling out the win.

Scoreline:

Singles:
No. 1 Cherif Sauma – 6-3, 6-1, 6-0
No. 2 Reggie Park – 6-1, 6-1, 6-0
No. 3 Zach Amirian – 0-6, 3-6, 1-6

Doubles:
No. 1 Nate Schumann/Russell Sze – 6-1, 6-2, 6-1
No. 2 Elvis Zhang/Joseph Yang – 6-3, 6-3
No. 2 (Alts) Marco Lau/Jayden Chow – 1-6
No. 3 Ben Forsyth/Sam Crisman – 6-0, 7-6(7), 6-1

With the win, the Minutemen head into the final week of the regular season, 8-3, and 5-1 in Coastal League play, assuring themselves of no worse than a second place finish in league.

Up next: MHS will host the California Academy of Math and Sciences (CAMS) on Tuesday, as they celebrate senior captains, Reggie Park and Russell Sze, on Senior Day.
