Baseball:
If Claremont wanted a realistic chance to play for a Palomares League title with two weeks to play, they needed a victory over Bonita on Friday.
And the Wolfpack got a complete-game effort from Walter Bilau in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Bearcats.
CHS took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second and Bilau made that stand up.
With two weeks to play, Claremont trails first-place Ayala by two games, and they lead third-place Glendora by one game.
The Wolfpack have two next week with the Tartans and finish out the regular season with a two-game set with the Bulldogs.
But back to Friday.
Bilau surrendered just one earned run on four hits.
He issued four walks and registered four strikeouts.
Sixty-three of his 100 pitches were strikes.
Esteban Parra singled and scored.
Sean Compton drew a pair of walks and scored.
Parker Alexander drove in a run on a sac fly.
Austin Banuelos, Brady Horn and Gavin Lennig had one single apiece for the Bearcats.
Ryder Gibson got the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over two innings of work.
Gibson was better than his numbers might indicate, and he walked one and fanned a pair of CHS batters.
In the second inning, the leadoff man reached on an error and one run scored on a dropped third strike.
Adam Raab came in and provided four scoreless innings in relief on one hit.
Raab issued one walk and registered four strikeouts.
Nico Vasquez walked, doubled twice, including a two-run double in the second and scored a pair of runs.
Kai Messner had an RBI single in the four-run second inning and scored.
Jacob Lucas walked and scored.
Reed Miller drove in a run on a sac fly.
Evan Blacksher, Dane Dorman and Maxi Garcia singled.
Brady Houlton reached base on an error, and he came around to score.
Up next: The Wolfpack host Glendora on Wednesday and the Bearcats welcome Walnut to their campus.
The first pitch for both games is 3:30.
