Baseball:
Upland secured Baseline League victory No. 1 on Monday.
One week after being swept by Chino Hills, the Highlanders edged their visitors from Rancho Cucamonga, 2-1, thanks to Andrew Weber.
Weber went the distance and allowed one run on three hits.
He issued two walks and registered eight strikeouts.
Ethan Diaz singled and scored.
Grant Thomas and Rowan Suchanek had one singled apiece to account for the rest of the RCHS offense.
Joey Lopez got the loss after surrendering just two runs on three hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Lopez walked three and fanned six UHS batters.
Jared Mock drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth inning.
Darien Maung walked and his RBI single in the first inning gave Upland a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Maung drew a leadoff walk.
Jaydin Castro came on to pinch run, and he moved to second on Angelo Mantilla’s sac bunt.
Two batters later, Dylan Trejo’s two-out RBI single scored Castro to secure the 2-1 victory.
Andrew Armendarez walked and scored.
Trejo went 2-for-3.
Up next: The Highlanders travel to RCHS on Wednesday for game two of the three-game set.
