Tennis:
Thanks to Maranatha for this report:
The league’s dominant team since 2023, Geffen Academy/UCLA, came to town today and showed why they are in a class of their own in the Coastal League. Since 2022, when they were co-league champions with Maranatha, Geffen has gone undefeated in league play; and that streak doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.
Both teams came into today’s match with a share of the league lead, each with an undefeated league record.
But that’s where the similarities end.
The Bruins defeated Maranatha’s last two league opponents, 16-2, while the Minutemen won both matches on games, after ending in 9-9 ties.
Despite the lopsided 16-2 score, the Minutemen played some of their best tennis of the year and really enjoyed facing, by far, the highest level of tennis they’ve faced all season.
It took some one set, and others two sets to get used to the speed and shape of the Bruins’ shots; but by the third round, they finally were able to acclimate and play their opponents tougher.
The set that epitomized that, was the third round play of No. 1 doubles, Nate Schumann/Russell Sze, who were down, 5-3, before reeling off 3 straight games, and holding two set points at 6-5, 40-15.
They eventually fell, 7-6(4), but really gave their opponents a run for their money.
Maranatha’s lone victories came from No. 1 singles Cherif Sauma and No. 2 Reggie Park, who defeated the Bruins’ No. 3, 6-2 and 6-0 respectively.
With the loss, Maranatha drops to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in league, while the Bruins improve to 5-3; 3-0.
Before going into Easter Break next week, the Minutemen play one more match, traveling to Montebello High School on Thursday to face the Oilers in a non-league contest.
