Baseball:

Don’t let West Covina’s 3-10 record as they entered Monday’s contest with Edgewood fool you.

Half came by two runs or less.

In fact, four of the five are one-run losses.

On Monday, Edgewood scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and then West Covina plated 10 of the game’s final 11 runs in a 10-3 victory.

Rieleigh Rangel went six innings to earn the win.

The freshman surrendered three runs (two earned) and scattered seven hits.

Rangel issued one walk and registered six strikeouts.

Adrian Cabrera got the final three outs, including two via strikeout.

Raymond Tafolla had a two-run single in the top of the first inning.

Tony Madriz doubled and scored.

Noah Ramirez singled twice and scored.

Omar Chavez walked, singled and scored.

Ricky Bocanegra, Jacob Mayo and Vincent Mancilla had one single apiece for the Lions.

Ramirez didn’t give a free pass and struck out two WCHS batters.

The Bulldogs got to Omar Chavez for four runs (three earned) on four hits over two innings.

Chavez didn’t issue a walk and registered a pair of strikeouts.

Levi Ruiz went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a pair of RBIs.

Ethan Okazaki singled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Gabriel Diaz had an RBI double and scored, and he was plunked twice.

Quotable:

West Covina coach, Justin Torres: “We had a rough start, but our pitching is getting to where it needs to be and we’re throwing far more strikes. Hitting, we’ve shown spurts of what we should be, but we have room for improvement. Our biggest improvement has been our pitching and our defense as the weeks have gone on. We have three transfers and we’ve gotten two of them eligible. We expect to get the other on Friday. Rangel is a freshman that’s going to be ridiculous in what he’s capable of doing. He’s pitching with confidence and the team believes in him.”
