Baseball:
Damien finally secured its first win in the month of March.
To be fair to the Spartans, they battled the toughest of competition, including Ayala, Santa Margarita, St John Bosco and Orange Lutheran.
On Tuesday, DHS claimed an 8-3 victory over their visitors from La Habra.
They scored a pair of runs in the second, and the Spartans got three runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Damien out-hit the Highlanders, 10-6, and they had a 4-0 edge in extra-base hits.
Layne Hansen went 1 1/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs on four hits.
Hansen walked two and fanned three LHHS batters.
Jacob Campos was credited with the win after 3 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings.
Campos issued one walk and registered three strikeouts.
Isaiah Seawright got the final six outs, and he surrendered one run on two hits.
Seawright didn’t give a free pass and struck out two.
Nico DeCorte singled twice and scored.
Tatem Borgogno and Austin Stoa had RBI singles in the top of the second to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
Bobby Fierro had an RBI ground out.
George Rocco singled and scored.
Gavin Klein walked and singled.
Angel Acuna walked and scored.
Bobby Brooks got the start, and he was charged with two runs on three hits over 1 2/3 innings.
He walked two and struck out a pair of Spartans.
Patrick Castaneda got the loss after surrendering three runs (one earned) on four hits over 2 1/3 innings.
Castaneda issued two walks and registered three strikeouts.
Grant Corder singled and scored.
Michael Mansour had a two-run double in the fifth and scored.
Aiden East tripled in a run.
Nico Vasquez went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.
Brady Bickham drew a pair of walks, was hit by pitch and tripled.
Tyler Swilling walked, doubled and scored.
Ryan Gonzalez walked, singled and scored.
Elius Kelly went 1-for-3, was hit by pitch and drove in one run.
Gino Tarzia singled and scored two runs.
Up next: After tournament play next week, the Spartans will open Baseline League play on Monday April 6th.
Damien will host Rancho Cucamonga for the first of a three-game series with the Cougars.
