Tennis:

The last time the Minutemen faced Santa Fe was in the 2013 CIF-SS D5 Semi-Finals.

It was a match that came down to the final singles set, with Santa Fe advancing to the finals with a 10-8 win.

They ended up easily winning the championship match, 14-4.

Though they last met 13 years ago, Coach Arthur Hsieh remembered a distinct brand of play that the Chiefs played with, which he relayed to his players before today’s match.

The Minutemen singles squad was prepared.

The starters swept the eight sets they played, with the lone singles loss coming after subbing in a bench player.

No. 1 and No. 2, Cherif Sauma and Reggie Park, won their 5 sets without dropping a game, while freshman, No. 3 Zach Amirian, registered his first high school victories, with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 sweep.

The doubles squad was anchored by No. 1 Nate Schumann/Russell Sze, who swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

It was a slow start for Schumann/Sze, who fell behind, 0-3, in the opening set, before rallying for a 6-4 win.

The only other doubles win came from No. 3 Ben Forsyth/Sam Crisman, who won their first set, 6-3.

They almost won the final set of the day, a see-saw set with multiple lead changes.

It came down to a tiebreaker, where Forsyth/Crisman came from behind to hold two match points.

The Chiefs responded with aggressive play and won the final 4 points, to take the tiebreaker, 8-6, for a 7-6(6) win.

Up next: The Minutemen (2-1;1-0) travel to Monrovia High School on Monday for a matchup against the Wildcats (3-1).
