Tennis:

After suffering from nerves in their season opening loss last week to Pasadena, the Minutemen were more composed in Tuesday’s 11-7 victory over New Roads in the Coastal League opener.

Maranatha started off with a quick 3-0 advantage as one of the Jaguars’ players was a last-minute scratch due to illness, forcing the forfeiting of his sets, repeating what happened last year.

In that contest, New Roads managed to overcome that deficit to squeeze out a 10-8 win in a dramatic final set.

With that match in their memory, the Minutemen got off to a strong start today, with a first-round sweep.

In fact, the final set of the first round clinched their 10th point.

That was thanks to Cherif Sauma’s hard-fought match at No. 1 singles that lasted so long that MHS’s No. 1 Doubles Nate Schumann/Russell Sze already won two sets.

Sauma eventually pulled out the 7-5 win in over an hour.

Having already clinched the win, Maranatha put in their reserves, giving Daniel Chen, Jayden Chow, Marco Lau, and Wesley Schwartz and opportunity to get valuable playing time and experience.

Singles: (5-4):
No. 1 Cherif Sauma 7-5, 6-0 (forfeit)
(Alt) Daniel Chen 0-6
No. 2 Reggie Park 6-2, 0-6, 6-0 (forfeit)
No. 3 Zach Amirian 0-6, 1-6, 6-0 (forfeit)

Doubles: (6-3):
No. 1 Nate Schumann/Russell Sze 6-3, 6-1, 6-1
No. 2 Elvis Zhang/Joseph Yang 3-6, 6-4
(Alt) Marco Lau/Jayden Chow 2-6
No. 3 Sam Crisman/Ben Forsyth 6-0, 6-2
Sam Crisman/(Alt) Wesley Schwartz 1-6

Up next: The Minutemen (1-1; 1-0) travel to Santa Fe High School on Thursday for their third match of the season.

Records: New Roads (0-2, 0-1); Maranatha (1-1, 1-0)
