Boys Soccer:

Two days after a CIF-SS Division 7 opening round (3-1) victory over the Geffen Academy, the Minutemen were set for a Friday night showdown with No. 1 seeded Artesia.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Maranatha equalized when junior captain Anthony Ter-Matevosyan scored off a cross from freshman Parker Wood, less than five minutes after the restart.

The score was all knotted up for the remainder of regulation and OT.

Senior backup keeper George Kefalas earned Man of the Match honors, notching five saves during the run of play, and two more during the penalty shootout to put the Minutemen through to the CIF-SS Division 7 quarterfinals.

Colin Lonneman buried the seventh-round penalty shot, sealing the win.

Up next: MHS will travel to Cerritos on Tuesday in a quarterfinal round showdown.

The Dons (15-4-2) secured a 2-0 victory in the second round over their visitors from Western Christian.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach, Walker Haynes: “We knew going into this matchup that Artesia was big, physical, organized and disciplined. But the team stepped up, even going down a goal in the first half, the boys didn’t flinch. They just kept working, and we found an equalizer shortly after the break. From there it was just a gritty battle. Everyone played hard for 100 minutes. George Kefalas was a wall in goal, defense was tenacious, the midfield put in work, and offense kept knocking. I’m extremely proud of the senior leadership, and how the captains stepped up and led the penalty shootout. The fans were really into the game, and that fueled the emotions of the moment. It was a tremendous game, and well-deserved win.”
