Bonita met its match in Tuesday’s Copper Division title game at the prestigious Damien Classic.
Esperanza entered the game 16-1, and 119 spots higher than the Bearcats in the MaxPreps state rankings.
EHS got out to a 24-5 lead after eight minutes, and they would go on to claim a 70-62 victory.
After the first period, Bonita outscored Esperanza, 57-46, but credit to the Aztecs.
EHS shot 55-percent for the game, as opposed to 35-percent for BHS.
Esperanza connected on 6-of-15 3-point attempts, while Bonita went 7-for-25.
Alex Van Otterloo led the Aztecs with 21 points and nine rebounds, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Jackson Fries provided 13 points and three assists in the win.
James Kim scored a game-high 26 points to earn all-tournament honors.
Kim went 3-of-8 from 3-point land, and he was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
In spite of being one of the shorter guys on the Bearcats, Kim led BHS with six rebounds to go with his three assists and a pair of steals.
Carson Zylstra contributed 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Bonita converted on 17-of-20 free throws, while Esperanza went 8-for-13.
Up next: The Bearcats will go for Palomares League victory No. 1 on Wednesday, as they travel to Claremont.
The tip if set for 6:30.
BHS resumes league play having won seven of their last nine games.
