Football:

It isn’t how you start.

It’s the way you finish.

That sure held true for the Chino Hills football program.

The Huskies trailed 19-12 to Notre Dame at halftime on a wet Friday night in Sherman Oaks.

However, CHHS would close out their CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinal on a 40-7 run.

Chino Hills cruised to a 54-26 victory and earned a home game in next week’s D-3 semifinal.

The Huskies out-rushed the Knights, 281-21.

They also had eight TDs on the ground as compared to two for their host.

Jacob Jimenez continued to be the workhorse for CHHS.

Jimenez carried the ball 32 times for 192 yards.

And that included four TD runs.

Quarterback Alex Medyn gained 55 yards on 10 carries, and he scored three times.

Wyatt Turner carried the ball four times for 34 yards and one score.

Medyn completed 8-of-13 for 151 yards.

He didn’t toss a TD and more importantly, the Huskies’ senior didn’t turn the ball over on a very wet night.

Calum Ferrell caught three passes for 82 yards.

Marcus Kalta had a 39-yard reception.

Jimenez caught one pass for 18 yards and Nate Jarrett reeled in a pair of passes for 12 yards.

Cayden Beyer led the Chino Hills defense with eight tackles, while Turner O’Dell had and Noah Curtin had seven apiece.

Ashton Bateman, Dawaun Nettingham, Jacob Baker and Nathan Gonzalez contributed six tackles each.

Andrew Baldomino totaled five tackles in the win.

Curtin had one sack, while Ja’kobi Grant finished with a pair of tackles and one sack.

Beyer and Baker each recovered a fumble.

Curtis caused one fumble.

Carter Unaka had one tackle and had the only interception of the game.

Noah Ahari converted six of his eight extra-point attempts.

Medyn actually punted the ball twice for 60 yards, and Ferrell had one punt for 34 yards.

Wyatt Brown completed 18-of-38 for 242 yards in the loss.

Brown tossed a pair of TD passes and one interception.

Noel Washington led Notre Dame with 24 yards on four carries.

Luc Weaver caught six passes for 116 yards and two TDs.

Emmanuel Pullins reeled in six passes for 69 yards.

Troy Trejo finished with 39 yards on three receptions.

Up next: The Huskies will host Pacifica of Oxnard on Friday in a D-3 semifinal.

The Tritons (12-0) cruised to a 28-7 victory over top-seeded Bishop Amat.

It’s CHHS first semifinal run since 2021.

Quotable:

Chino Hills quarterback, Alex Medyn: “We prepared for it (the rain) in practice. We knew the weather would be an issue. Once it started pouring, we kept the ball on the ground and trusted in our offensive line. It’s the best being able to do my part in wins. I started running the ball more this year and I love doing it. Every week, Jacob has been impressive. With him running the ball as well as he does, it really opens up the offense. At halftime, our defense told us they were going to stop them, and I knew we’d keep scoring. What made me most proud was that we didn’t flinch when we were down 13 twice. We never blinked.”
