The Damien water polo program is giving their parents a lot of excitement and gray hair during an historic playoff run.

DHS edged El Segundo, 15-14, on Friday night in overtime.

Damien has one-goal wins in the last two rounds, including a 14-13 victory in the second round over No. 4 seeded Crean Lutheran.

Senior, Zack Montoya led the Spartans with seven big goals.

Aaron Kashifalghita, Zechariah Verduzco-Murphy and Diego Solis added two goals apiece.

Landon Garcia and Maddox Redfearnalso contributed one goal each to round out Damien’s scoring.

In the cage, goalie Brennan Dallas, a sophomore, recorded eight saves, anchoring a strong defensive performance that also managed 10 steals as a team.

The DHS defense kept the Spartans within striking distance throughout the game.

Damien got out to a 6-3 lead at the half.

El Segundo came out in the third period firing on all cylinders with three quick unanswered goals, to tie the game at 6-6.

The Eagles appeared to have the upper hand, up two goals with approximately one minute remaining in the game.

Verduzco-Murphy and Montoya rallied the Spartans late to force overtime.

In the second period of overtime, and with just four seconds left on the clock, Diego Solis fired in the game-winning goal, sealing Damien’s dramatic victory.
