Volleyball:
Since 2013, the Gabrielino volley program had won 11 consecutive Mission Valley League championships.
The 2020 season was wiped out by COVID.
Over that stretch, the Eagles went 130-2, and nine of their 11 titles were undefeated runs of 12-0.
Marshall, also the Eagles, joined the Mission Valley League in 2014, and the Eagles had gone 0-for-18 against Gabrielino in volleyball matches.
That was until 2025.
Marshall didn’t just beat Gabrielino once, the Eagles picked up the two-match season sweep.
On Friday, Marshall secured their first Mission Valley League championship, and they did so by persevering in five games at Gabrielino.
Marshall won by scores of 25-12, 19-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-13.
Naomi Taylor had a career-high 23 kills and three blocks.
Ashley Dominguez provided 40 assists, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Lena Lao added 15 digs and three aces.
Livsey Teems chipped in with eight kills, six aces and 15 digs.
Harlem Castro finished with 14 digs.
Up next: The Eagles close out the regular season on Tuesday, as they host Rosemead at 4:30.
Quotable:
Marshall coach, Jeff Thai: “Every player who got on the court had big key moments, but none bigger than Kyla Dancel, getting a stuffed block at the end of the game. Although what she does on the court won’t reflect on the stats sheet, she is vital to our success. The energy was electric, and I’m so proud of every single one of my players. This is the first year in school history that Marshall has won a league title in girls’ volleyball, and it’s all because of the consistent hard work of these girls.”
