Football:
Citrus pulled off an historic 48-43 victory over their visitors from Mt. SAC on Saturday evening.
The Owls overcame a pair of 19-point deficits and made a defensive stop in the waning moments to secure its first win over the Mounties in what is believed to be 30 years.
Trailing 48-43 with 19 seconds to play, the No. 2 ranked team in the state drove 73 yards to the Owls’ 9-yard line.
It was 4th-and-4.
Daunte Bell, who threw for 438 yards, rolled to his left, tossed the ball towards a Mounties’ receiver near the Citrus sideline and Durand Johnson picked the pass to seal the most important win in Coach Brandon Hayashi’s fifth year at the Glendora school.
It also happened to be the conference opener for both programs.
Citrus outscored Mt. SAC 27-10 in the second half.
Former Monrovia quarterback Brian Salazar had the biggest game of his football career.
The Owls freshman accounted for 411 yards of total offense and six total TDs.
He completed 25-of-38 for 389 yards.
That included five TD passes and no turnovers.
Salazar had to be as close to error free football as possible, because the Mounties offense racked up 671 yards.
In the 20-7 third quarter, Salazar scored on a 1-yard TD run.
And he tossed 75-and-15-yard TD passes to Lorenza Simmons.
Salazar also found Cameron Bateman on a 41-yard score, Jojo Enriquez from 14 yards out, and he had a 31-yard TD pass to JP Sandiford to pull the Owls to within 33-28 of the Mounties.
Salazar’s 15-yard score to Simmons with 56 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave Citrus its first lead of the game at 41-36.
Keyonn Chatmann led the ground game with 63 yards on 16 carries.
Chatmann scored on a 13-yard TD run with 12:31 to play to extend the Owls lead to 48-36.
Mt. SAC would answer late, but they came up just short.
Bateman caught seven passes for 113 yards and the first quarter TD.
Simmons had game highs in receptions (9), receiving yards (128) and TD catches (2).
Sandiford reeled in three passes for 48 yards and one score.
Keaton Morales and Enriquez had two catches apiece for a combined 77 yards.
Bell completed 32-of-57 for 438 yards.
He tossed a pair of TDs and two picks.
Bell hit Jordyn Harris on a 38-yard TD pass to give Mt. SAC a 12-0 lead with just over eight minutes gone by.
With 2:51 to play, Bell found Sherard Willis on a 6-yard TD pass in the west end zone to pull the Mounties to within 48-43 of the Owls.
Former Bishop Amat stud Aiden Ramos continued to dominate for the Mounties.
Ramos had game highs in carries (19), rushing yards (139) and rushing TDs (3).
Ramos had TD runs of 3, 8 and 54 yards.
His 54-yard score at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter gave Mt. SAC a comfortable 33-14 lead over the Owls.
Devyn Turner (4-for-39) and Damien Smith (7-for-39) combined to carry the ball 11 times for 78 yards.
Devon Anderson led the MSAC receiving corps with seven catches for 102 yards.
