Far more times than not, it seems as though a quarterback or offensive player gets the lion’s share of the credit for a program’s success.
That’s not to say the quarterback isn’t the most consequential position on the field, because it is.
However, there have been many occasions where a defense has been the key to victory.
And it’s time to give those athletes their due.
In this case, it’s Bonita safety Leah Reynolds.
The Bearcats’ junior has played a starring role in BHS winning five consecutive games this past week.
Reynolds finished with six tackles and far more importantly, six interceptions.
Reynolds picked two Northview, three La Serna and one Keppel pass this past week.
Leah is tied for fourth in the state in interceptions.
And she was only used sparingly in the 45-0 victory over MKHS.
Bonita coach Mike Mann showed Reynolds a little love by allowing his defensive star to get a couple plays in at wide receiver.
Mann and quarterback Tressa Beatty designed an end zone play, and Beatty hit Reynolds for a TD in the La Serna game.
Reynolds has a team-high 13 interceptions this season, which is four more than a stud named Hayden Andrew.
Andrew leads BHS with 60 tackles.
Up next: The Lady Bearcats will travel to Ayala on Tuesday evening at 6:45.
It’s the first Palomares League game for both programs.
