Football:

The playoff-like showdown in Walnut between San Diego Mesa and Mt. SAC seemed like a heavyweight boxing match in which the Mounties landed one more punch.

Mt. SAC outlasted the Olympians, 21-18, on Saturday evening.

However, it wasn’t the greatest start for the home team.

On the first play from scrimmage, Aleonte Logan caught an 83-yard TD pass from quarterback Reggie Johnson.

It took the Mounties nearly 40 minutes of game clock before they took their first lead.

But they did not relinquish that advantage the rest of the way.

Aiden Ramos was the Mounties workhorse.

Ramos carried the ball 24 times for 123 yards.

And he accounted for Mt. SAC’s offensive production with TD runs of 10, 2 and 1 yard.

Ramos also totaled four receptions for 22 yards.

Damien Smith gained 49 yards on 13 carries.

The Mounties had a 166-85 advantage on the ground.

Oddly, both programs finished with exactly 369 yards of total offense.

Hunter Herrera completed 22-of-36 for 203 yards.

Bronseman Davis caught five passes for 45 yards.

Elijah Crook extended a couple of drives with his two receptions for 52 yards.

Reggie Johnson ran the San Diego Mesa offense, completing 18-of-33 for 284 yards.

Along with the long catch on the first play from scrimmage, Johnson found Jay Porter on a 75-yard scoring strike with 1:48 to play in the game.

It pulled the Olympians to within 21-18.

They attempted an onside kick, but the Mounties recovered the ball and ran out most of the game clock.

Joshua Hossmann booted a 42-yard field goal midway through the second quarter for the visitors.

Johnson also led the Olympians with 49 yards rushing on eight carries.

Logan (4-for-131) and Porter (2-for-82) combined for six catches for 213 yards and two TDs.

Teyondre Coleman led the Mt. SAC defense with six tackles, while Jeremiah Faustin and Jayden Murrietta had five tackles apiece.

Blake Hiligh intercepted one pass to go with his four tackles.

Kanyee Childress had the other interception for the Mounties defense.

Up next: The Mounties will host El Camino next Saturday at 6.

The Warriors (2-0) edged Canyons, 17-13, in their week-two contest.
