Football:
No one really knew what to expect.
After a three-point season-opening loss at Muir in week zero, the Bonita football program welcomed Diamond Ranch to its 2025 home opener.
However, they were doing so without approximately seven starters.
Worse yet, that injury list included the Bearcats two biggest game changers in Travis Lippert (QB) and Joseph Lara (RB/LB).
Apparently, BHS didn’t get the memo that they were shorthanded, because they jumped on the Panthers early and cruised to a 37-0.
Paul Mercado picked up a blocked punt by his teammate Ryder Grosenbach, and he brought it back 20 yards for a 7-0 lead.
BHS blocked two punts on Friday.
Cade Burbidge, in his first career start at the high school level, tossed a pair of TDs in the win.
The BHS freshman hooked up with Jacob Maddox on an 8-yard scoring strike.
And his 80-yard TD pass to Adam Hodgson capped Bonita’s scoring for the night.
Hodgson also booted a 26-yard field goal to extend the Bearcats lead to 17-0.
Ezekiel Velarde returned the second half kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown.
Sebastian Vazquez scored on a 4-yard TD run to give BHS a 14-0 lead.
Up next: The Bearcats will host Aquinas on Friday at 7.
The Falcons (2-1) cruised to a 34-7 victory at Glendora in their week-one contest.
