Football:
Maranatha put its nonleague showdown with visiting Artesia to bed early on Thursday evening.
The Minutemen (2-0) led 28-0 after the first 12 minutes and they took a 42-7 advantage into the break.
In fact, MHS scored the game’s first 42 points before AHS quarterback Jorge Velasquez snuck in from four yards out with just seconds to play in the first half.
Maranatha has now scored 83 points in week zero and one wins over Arroyo and Artesia, respectively.
MHS quarterback Cooper Berry is off to a great start to his junior campaign.
Six days after tossing three TD passes at Arroyo, Berry threw six TD passes to three different receivers.
Berry completed an insane 22-of-25 for 420 yards, and he did not turn the ball over.
Through the first two games, Berry has nine TD passes and one pick.
He and Nico Vergara hooked up on scoring passes of 11, 20 and 25 yards.
Vergara tallied nine receptions for 151 yards.
On their first drive of the game, Berry found George Pamilton for a 65-yard score.
Already leading 14-0 midway through the first quarter, Brandon Chen picked up a fumble and rumbled 40 yards into the west end zone.
Pamilton’s 55-yard catch and run was arguably the game’s most athletic play.
And Berry found Bradley Loiacono for an 11-yard TD.
Loiacono caught five passes for 72 yards.
Pamilton had five receptions for 125 yards and two scores.
Blake O’Brien caught two passes for 85 yards.
Berry had 13 of Maranatha’s 26 rushing yards on six carries.
Up next: The Minutemen host the reigning two-time CIF-SS champs from Rio Hondo Prep next Thursday at 7.
The Kares (1-0) host Quartz Hill tonight (Friday) at 7 at Kare Park in Irwindale.
