Football:
Damien opened its 2025 season with a 20-15 victory at Aquinas.
The Spartans took a 14-0 lead into the break.
One didn’t have to look much further than the quarterback position to determine why DHS left San Bernardino with the W.
Isaiah Arriaza completed 23-of-34 pass attempts for 292 yards and two TDs.
Arriaza did not turn the ball over.
His counterpart, Aquinas’ Charlie Reyes, went 9-of-17 for 106 yards.
Reyes didn’t toss a TD pass, and he was picked twice.
The QB rating told the story, as Arriaza (113.8) had a massive advantage over Reyes (32.6).
Micah McFarland led the DHS ground game with 65 yards on eight carries, including one TD run.
Eric Osorio gave the Falcons headaches throughout.
The DHS senior had game highs in receptions (12) and receiving yards (173).
Osorio actually finished with three more receptions than every Aquinas receiver combined.
Gavin Williams caught four passes for 55 yards and one TD.
Williams also picked a pass on defense, as did Andrew Metz.
While he struggled through the air, Reyes carried the ball 14 times for 128 yards, and he scored both Aquinas TDs.
Reyes totaled 57 more yards than the entire Damien ground game.
Jordan Stewart and Logan Miller had three catches apiece for a combined 84 yards.
Up next: The Spartans travel to JSerra on Friday at 7.
The Lions took a 35-0 pounding at Sierra Canyon in their week-zero contest.
