Football:
In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ was released about a mysterious New York millionaire that was obsessed about reuniting with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan, in Long Island, New York.
Fast forward a century, and Covina junior Gatsbee Gumban was nothing short of ‘great’ in the 2025 season opener for the Colts.
Gumban carried the ball 28 times for 340 yards in CHS’ 49-35 victory over La Puente at Covina District Field.
That included first-half TD runs of 6, 28, 71 and 58 yards.
The 71-and-58-yard TDs gave Covina a 42-28 lead at the half.
Gumban only played half of the fourth quarter before leaving the game with cramps.
La Puente took an early 7-0 lead when Ezekeil Zamora hit Ivan Lopez on a 68-yard TD pass.
The Colts answered with three consecutive scores, and they never trailed again.
Both programs made adjustments at the break, and they held the other to just seven points apiece in the second half.
In all, Zamora threw four TD passes, including a 28-yard strike to Ivan Lopez and a 54 yarder to Aaron Silva.
Silva had a 65-yard TD run in the third quarter, and he finished with 187 rushing yards.
Roy Vasquez tossed a 7-yard TD pass to Edwin Sandoval, and then he scored on a 2-yard TD run.
Both took place in the 28-point first quarter for CHS.
After Zamora pulled LPHS to within 42-35 of Covina, Joseph Ramirez put the nail in the coffin with a 28-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.
The Colts offense may not have scored in the second half, but they were able to pull off a Rio Hondo Prep, and they allowed their running game to effectively bleed the clock dry.
Up next: The Colts travel to Baldwin Park next Thursday at 7.
