College Baseball:
Mt. SAC took a huge forward step on Saturday to what they hope will be a CCCAA State title.
The Mounties edged Sierra College, 4-3, in 11 innings, in first-round play.
The final four has a double elimination format.
Izeah Muniz, the state leader in wins, went eight innings, and he was charged with two unearned runs on five hits.
Muniz walked four and struck out eight.
Sam Silversmith was credited with the win after going three innings and allowing one run on two hits.
Silversmith issued two walks and registered five strikeouts.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Jake Redding doubled in a run, and two batters later, Kimo Wilinski’s RBI single got the Wolverines even at 2-2.
In the top of the ninth, Colin Gallagher doubled in Aidan Kulbeck to tie the game again.
This time, it was 3-3.
Wilinksi went 2-for-2 with a walk and the RBI.
Nathan Erickson, Cody Ferrante and Brady Ranallo had one single apiece.
Cowen Meyer walked and scored.
Cam Stratton went seven innings for Sierra, and he was responsible for two runs on six hits.
Stratton walked a pair and fanned eight MSAC batters.
Dylan Schmitt was charged with one run on two hits and a walk in the eighth inning.
Tyler Hutchinson got the loss.
Hutchinson allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk over two innings.
Tyler Stull got Mt. SAC out to an early lead with his RBI triple in the first inning.
Diego Ortiz singled Stull home, and the Mounties enjoyed a 2-0 lead.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Noah Rodriguez drew a bases loaded walk.
In the bottom of the 11th, the Mounties had Terrell Jackson on second and Noah Rodriguez occupied first base with no outs.
Bryan Bradshaw laid down what was supposed to be a sac bunt.
However, Bradshaw beat the throw, and Jackson came around third to score the game winning run on a throwing error.
Ortiz had a game-high three hits to go along with his run and RBI.
Landon White singled and scored.
Bradshaw walked and singled.
Stull went 1-for-5 with a run and one RBI.
Jackson walked and scored.
Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.
Ty Thomas, Jackson Giacone and Cole Nachreiner singled for the Mounties.
Up next: The Mounties will face West Valley on Sunday at 2 at Mt. SAC.
WVCC edged Cypress, 3-2, in their first-round contest.
