Baseball:
Miguel Castillo and Conrad Hunziker III teamed up on the mound in Muir’s 3-1 victory over their visitors from Rio Hondo Prep in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.
It’s the first playoff win for the Mustangs since 2019.
Castillo went five innings, and he was charged with two runs on one hit.
Castillo didn’t issue a walk and registered four strikeouts.
Hunziker provided two scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
He walked three and struck out four RHP batters.
With one out in the top of the first inning, Nate Curtis singled.
Curtis stole second, and he scored on a two-out single by Ivan Tkach.
Hunziker faced a runner on first and second with one out scenario in the top of the seventh.
The lanky right-hander, however, closed out the win with a strikeout looking, and he induced a fielder’s choice force out at second base.
Aside from the singles from Curtis and Tkach in the first inning, the RHP offense went 0-for-22 the rest of the way.
Nathan Harwood got the loss.
One of the three runs charged to RHP freshman was earned on three hits over five innings.
Harwood issued five walks and registered six strikeouts.
Julian Rodriguez provided a scoreless and hitless sixth inning in relief for the Kares.
Trailing 1-0 and with one out in the bottom of the first inning, Luca Cano and Ezekiel Rodriguez drew walks and Hunziker was hit by pitch.
The Mustangs evened the game one batter later when Fletcher Paddock drew a bases loaded walk.
Muir took its first lead in the fourth when Cano’s RBI ground out scored Donovan Williams.
In the fifth, Hunziker led off with a walk and stole second.
He advanced to third on an error, and the MHS senior scored on a wild pitch.
In total, Cano drew a pair of walks, scored and had one RBI.
Kahlil Rishwain singled.
Williams singled and scored.
Paddock singled to go along with his RBI.
Up next: Muir will travel to Newport Beach on Tuesday to battle Pacifica Christian.
The Tritons (13-11) secured a 6-2 victory at Quartz Hill in their first-round contest.
