Baseball:
Chino Hills is finding its rhythm at the best possible time.
After being swept by Los Osos (April 7-12th) in a three-game Baseline League series, the Huskies answered back with 2-1 series victories over Etiwanda and Damien in that order.
Fast forward to April 28th, and CHHS knocked off their visitors and the Baseline League leaders from Rancho Cucamonga, 1-0, in the first of three games this week with the Cougars.
With five games to play, Chino Hills is tied for third with Etiwanda, and they’re just one-game back of second place Damien.
CHHS has won three games in a row and four of their last five.
The Huskies manufactured one run in the bottom of the first inning, and Matt McCliman, Frankie Brazil, Noah Resensez and Matt Tejada combined on the mound to make that one run stand up.
McCliman went three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and walking two.
Brazil allowed one hit over his one inning in relief.
Resendez provided a scoreless fifth inning, and allowing one hit, a walk and striking out one.
Tejada earned a six-out save and surrendered just one hit.
Jose Gomez had half of Rancho Cucamonga’s four hits on Monday.
Brock Foulds doubled, and Grant Thomas drew a pair of walks and singled to account for the rest of the Cougars’ offense.
Foulds got the loss in spite of allowing just one run on six hits over six innings.
Foulds issued one walk and registered three strikeouts.
As mentioned, CHHS manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Matt Mendez led off with a single, and Brody Buoncristiani bunted him over to second.
Josh Mendez grounded out to the right side which allowed his brother to advance to third.
Matt McCliman followed with a clutch two-out hit for what turned out to be the game-winning RBI.
Jacob Jimenez, Jackson Aguayo and Branden Kim had one hit apiece for the Huskies.
Brazil walked and singled in Monday’s win.
