Baseball:

Things didn’t look promising early on for the Los Osos baseball program.

Damien scored five runs in the top of the first inning off Grizzlies’ ace, Reagan Samples.

And that included a grand slam.

However, LOHS would strike back with five of their own in the bottom of the second, and they scored once in the fourth to secure a 6-5 victory in the first of a three-game set with the Spartans.

Samples was charged with the five runs on six hits over three innings.

He issued three walks and struck out four DHS batters.

Wyatt Mohler earned the win after going four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

Mohler didn’t issue a base on balls, and he fanned one Spartan.

The LOHS junior needed 44 pitches to get through fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and 31 were strikes.

Bobby Logue had a two-out RBI double to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Three batters later, Grant Corder’s grand slam extended the Damien lead to 5-0.

Brady Bickham went 3-for-4, including a double.

Elius Kelly walked, singled and scored.

Logue finished 1-for-3 with the RBI double, a walk and one run scored.

Gino Tarzia walked and scored.

Ryan Boyle singled and Russell Del Castillo scored once for the Spartans.

Rudy O’Dell was struck with the loss after surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits over 5 1/3 innings.

O’Dell walked four and fanned five LOHS batters.

Ethan Chavez got the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Los Osos scored all five runs in the fourth with two outs.

Hunter Meyer singled and Reagan Samples walked.

After a Josh Chairez fielder’s choice and a John Flores strikeout, Sean Brian singled in the first run.

Drew Cromwell walked and then Roberto Topete singled to score Brian.

Two more runs would score on a Damien error.

Topete tied the game at 5-5 on a wild pitch.

Flores led off the fourth with a double.

And Cromwell drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with a squeeze bunt.

Topete finished 2-for-4 with a run, double and two RBIs.

Meyer and Chairez singled and scored one run apiece.

Cromwell walked, scored and had the RBI on the fourth-inning bunt.

Brian went 1-for-1 with a run and one RBI.

It only took Los Osos 10 days to make up the three games they lost against Rancho Cucamonga.

With five to play, RCHS and LOHS are tied for first place again.

Damien is one-game back, and Chino Hills and Etiwanda are two games out of first place.
