Baseball:

There was so much on the line when Glendora traveled to Bonita to finish off their three-game Palomares League series.

The Bearcats won the first two games, and then Mother Nature took over on Saturday morning.

The game got postponed while in the bottom of the first inning.

A Bonita win on Monday would have meant that BHS and Ayala would enter this week’s three-game set to decide the league championship dead even at 11-1.

However, Glendora had other ideas.

For the first time since May 1st of 2018, GHS defeated BHS in a baseball game.

Glendora rode the right arm of Tanner Grable, and the Tartans bats awoke in a 5-1 victory in La Verne.

GHS will now face Walnut on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with a one-game lead over fourth-place Claremont.

Grable went 4 1/3 innings, and he was charged with one run on seven hits.

He issued four walks and fanned five BHS batters.

Nick Gonzalez and Sebastian Lawrence combined to go 2 2/3 scoreless innings and they allowed just one hit apiece.

Neither Gonzalez nor Lawrence issued a walk, and they combined to strike out three.

Trailing 4-0, Cody White led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single.

Three batters later, Andrew Sanchez singled him home for the Bearcats lone run.

Sanchez went 2-for-4.

Landen Lambert singled and doubled.

LJ Vasquez walked and had a pair of singles.

Austin Banuelos and Dominic Garcia provided one hit apiece on Monday.

Sanchez got charged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Sanchez issued a pair of walks and struck out two GHS batters.

Adam Raab went 4 2/3 innings, and he surrendered two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Raab walked and struck out one batter apiece.

Aaron Jacobsen went 2-for-4 with a run in the third inning, and an RBI single in the sixth.

Kai Zeits singled twice, scored and his RBI single in the top of the third gave GHS a 1-0 lead.

Tyler Olbert went 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.

Jackson Glaze singled and drew a pair of walks, including one with the bases loaded.

Brayden Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

John Seader singled twice and scored three runs.

Grable singled once.

Quotable:

GHS pitcher, Tanner Grable: “I was super pumped to be able to start today’s game for us, and I just wanted to go out there and put our team in a place to win. This win was huge for us, as it kept us one game in front of Claremont going into our final series with Walnut. My fastball command didn’t feel the best today, but my change-up was working great as well, as was my curveball, so, I adjusted to throwing those pitches more often.”

GHS senior, Aaron Jacobsen: “Tanner pounded the zone all game, and his off-speed (pitches) looked great. He stayed composed even in big spots, and he got the job done. The relievers did awesome too. Beating Bonita was a personal goal of mine, although, I would’ve liked to win the series. However, it’s still a big win for us, and it makes this week a lot less stressful.”
