Baseball:

Two weeks ago, Chino Hills suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Los Osos in their first Baseline League series of 2025.

The Huskies regrouped and they’ve just captured consecutive Baseline League series over Etiwanda and Damien by an identical 2-1 margin.

On Friday, and with their series tied at 1-1, Damien took a 2-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning.

Brody Buoncristiani singled and Andrew Baldomino hit a sharp ground ball to third, and the CHHS junior reached base on an error to lead off the inning.

What made the play interesting is that Baldomino, one of the area’s most versatile athletes, is nursing an injury, and the best he could do is jog down the first base line.

That circumstance meant that Damien’s third baseman had all day to get the 5-3 putout.

But the throw was either errant or the first baseman misplayed it.

It allowed Baldomino to reach base safely, and he left the game for a pinch runner.

One batter later, Josh Mendez, in arguably the game’s defining moment, hit a three-run blast over the right field fence.

Chino Hills would go on to claim a 7-3 victory.

CHHS scored four times in the sixth and they got three more in the seventh.

Russell Del Castillo went 5 1/3 for DHS, and he was charged with three runs on five hits.

Del Castillo didn’t issue a walk and struck out four.

Ryan Wentworth was roughed up for four runs on five hits and a walk over 1 1/3 innings.

Josh Mendez finished 2-for-3 with the three-run HR, an RBI double, and he scored twice.

Jacob Jimenez scored and singled three times in four at-bats, including an RBI base hit in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-3.

Buoncristiani singled twice and scored.

Matt Mendez singled and scored.

Branden Kim drew a walk and scored a pair of runs.

Matt McCliman drove in an insurance run in the seventh on a sac fly.

Jackson Aguayo’s RBI single in the sixth gave CHHS a 4-2 lead.

Aydan Maxson went five innings, and he was charged with two runs on four hits to earn the win.

Maxson issued four walks, and he registered six strikeouts.

Max Zaldivar came on in the bottom of the sixth with the tying runs on first and second and no outs.

Zaldivar got the final six outs to earn the save.

Damien did push one run across in the sixth, but it was charged to Matt Tejada.

Zaldivar walked one and fanned a trio of Spartans.

Three Chino Hills pitchers combined to allow just three hits.

Gino Tarzia’s two-run double in the bottom of the second gave Damien a 2-0 lead.

Elius Kelly walked, singled and scored.

Grant Corder drew a pair of walks and scored.

Michael Mansour singled.

Pietro Rose had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the sixth to pull DHS to within 4-3 of CHHS.
