Baseball:
Rancho Cucamonga made a massive step towards a potential Baseline League title.
There is a long way to go, and Damien is just one-game back, but if the Cougars raise a banner at the end of the season, this week will have played a key role.
RCHS secured a three-game sweep over one of the area’s most talented and best coached teams in Los Osos.
The Cougars swept the Grizzlies by scores of 3-2, 3-1 in eight innings, and 5-2.
No one made a bigger impact in this week’s three-game set than Jacob Peyton.
He didn’t do much on Monday, but Wednesday, Peyton hit a two-run HR in the top of the eighth that turned out to be the difference.
And on Friday, he went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out 12 LOHS batters.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Peyton helped his own cause with a three-run HR.
Josh Chairez had a pair of singles for Los Osos.
Justin Yeutter went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Hunter Meyer walked, singled and scored.
Roberto Topete scored once on Friday.
Gavin Loeb Keene got the loss after surrendering five runs (two earned) on three hits over six innings.
Loeb Keene issued three walks and registered six strikeouts.
Grant Thomas went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
Brock Foulds walked and scored a pair of runs.
Aiden Bravo singled and Ethan Diaz and Rowan Suchanek scored one run apiece for the Cougars.
Quotable:
RCHS coach, Chris Amaya: “To be able to sweep a program like Los Osos is huge for us. There’s no doubt they’ve been one of the best programs in the area for the past few years. We played really well, and we hope we can keep it going into a tough series with Etiwanda next week. Jacob Peyton threw our team on his back today, with his performance on the mound, and his three-run HR.”
Los Osos coach, Travis Kelly: “First and foremost, we have to tip our caps to Rancho and Coach Amaya, who had them ready to battle and they were able to capitalize on us. Secondly, we had multiple chances in games one and two and we didn’t. Our offense didn’t come through. It happens, especially against a very good team. Our guys didn’t take this well. They are furious. They are hungry, and we will see where everything is at the end of the regular season.”
