Baseball:
Maranatha may very well win its seventh consecutive Olympic League title in 2025.
However, the rest of the pack is going to make the Minutemen fight for this one.
On Wednesday, MHS scored once in the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings to edge their visitors from Whittier Christian, 2-1, at Brookside Park.
Maranatha is 5-0 in league play, but three of the five are by two runs or less, and it took them eight innings to get past Village Christian last week.
Zach Strickland pitched his butt off, but he wasn’t in on the decision.
Strickland went six innings, allowing one run on two hits.
He issued four walks and registered 13 strikeouts.
Strickland expended 101 pitches, with 68 being strikes.
Brad Loiacono went a scoreless and hitless inning to get the win after the Minutemen scored in the bottom of the seventh.
Zion Park walked, doubled and scored the Heralds’ lone run.
Luke Jung had an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to account for the other WCHS base hit on Wednesday.
Jung was also saddled with the loss.
He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks.
Moe Aguirre went 2-for-4, and his two-out RBI single drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Trevor Rivas led off the seventh with a double and scored on the Aguirre base hit.
Yahir Treto gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead when he singled home Noe Zavala in the bottom of the fourth.
Will Suslow and Lukus Perez had one single apiece for Maranatha.
After a brutal start to the 2025 season, the Minutemen have now won eight consecutive games.
