Baseball:
Marshall Fundamental trailed South El Monte, 5-0, as they picked up their bats in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Eagles would score four in the fifth and they got one more in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
However, SEM, scored once in the top of the eighth inning to edge the Eagles, 6-5, in a Mission Valley League battle of unbeatens.
Caleb Thatcher went six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits.
Thatcher walked three and struck out nine.
Nate Callaway provided two innings in relief, and he was charged with one run on one hit.
Callaway walked one and fanned one SEM batter.
Armando Huizar went 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs.
Emiliano Gonzalez had a pair of singles, scored, and his RBI single in the top of the eighth turned out to be the game winning run.
Christian Ortega had a two-run double in the third inning to give SEM a 3-0 lead.
Julian Renteria singled, doubled and scored twice.
Gabriel Canchola and Xavier Cordova walked and scored one run apiece.
Christian Ortega went 6 1/3 innings, and he was charged with five runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Ortega didn’t issue a walk and registered six strikeouts.
Ryan Leon got the win after 1 2/3 innings in scoreless relief.
Leon allowed two hits and struck out one MF batter.
Elijah Lain went 2-for-4 with a solo HR and two runs.
Trevor Lain had a pair of doubles and one RBI.
Ben Muro scored and his two-run double in the fifth got Marshall on the board.
Ryan Pandullo went 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
Thatcher scored after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
Kaden Mullins, George Jennings and Callaway singled once each on Monday.
Up next: The Eagles travel to Arroyo (8-5-1, 2-2-1) on Wednesday at 3:15.
