Boys Athletes of the Week:

It would be difficult to find a pair of SGV area brothers that had a bigger combined impact in a quarterfinal round playoff win than Glendora’s Austin and Brandon Coronado.

Austin Coronado, a senior, has been a big contributor on both sides of the ball.

He’s done his share and then some at running back and linebacker.

His younger brother Brandon is a sophomore, who up until this point has spent most of his time at safety for the Tartans’ defense.

Trailing 13-0, and with a couple of minutes to play in the first half at Rancho Verde High School, Brandon Coronado came out of the bullpen, so to speak, and he took over the quarterbacking duties.

Coach Brandon Rohrer’s decision paid dividends early.

Coronado hit Tim Johnson on an 80-yard TD pass, and while trailing 13-7 at the break, GHS had some legit momentum and optimism.

Brandon gave the Tartans a one-point advantage just 131 seconds into the second half with a 40-yard TD run, and he followed that with a 13-yard TD run to give Glendora a 21-13 lead.

GHS closed out the win with a 26-yard Hunter Lemos field goal, and a 40-yard pick-six from Aidan Yamazaki.

Coronado completed 4-of-6 for 95 yards and the long TD to Johnson.

The Tartans’ sophomore carried the ball six times for 74 yards and two scores.

If Brandon’s contributions at quarterback weren’t enough, the sophomore also had an estimated 10 tackles and a pass deflection at safety.

That gets us to his big brother.

Austin is a bulldozer with a ball in his hands.

He gained 59 yards on eight carries.

And on defense, Austin Coronado had 12 tackles and a deflected pass that Yamazaki turned into his pick-six.

In their 31-7, CIF-SS Division 6 playoff opening victory at Agoura, Austin played another massive role in the win.

Of his eight tackles, Coronado had 3.5 sacks and five tackles for-loss, while Brandon tallied five tackles and an interception.

On the offensive side of the ball, Austin carried the ball seven times for 70 yards.

And that included TD runs of 4 and 45 yards to give GHS a 14-0 first-quarter lead at AHS.

For the season, Austin Coronado leads the Tartans with 11 rushing TDs, and he’s third in tackles to Aidan Yamazaki and Anthony Fiorenza.

Up next: GHS will host Dana Hills on Friday at 7.

The Dolphins (10-2) edged San Dimas, 38-35, on a last-second field goal.
