Football:
Chaffey College had to be very happy about the way things turned out on Saturday.
As the Panthers headed into week 10, they trailed Victor Valley by one-game in the American Metro Conference standings.
And while Chaffey and Santa Ana were both 3-1 in conference games, the Dons claimed a 31-22 victory over the Panthers last week and held the tiebreaker.
The Panthers got some unlikely help.
Desert (1-8) dropped a 34-7 beatdown on Santa Ana (7-2).
Chaffey needed and got a 44-27 victory at Victor Valley, and that earned the Panthers a spot in the American Championship Bowl game in two weeks at PCC.
However, it did not come easily.
Chaffey overcame four deficits to finish 8-2 in the regular season, and they left Victor Valley with a share of the American Metro Conference championship.
The Panthers had advantages in first downs (31-21), total offense (586-356), passing yards (346-306) and rushing (240-50).
Julian Viramontes completed 20-of-28 for 346 yards.
Viramontes tossed 27-and-54-yard TD to Nehemiah Harrison, and a 6-yard scoring strike to Jeremiah Beck.
J Shaun Thomas (13-for-80), Christian Bozeman (17-for-78 & one TD) and Alapaki Paiva (13-for-70 & one TD) combined to carry the ball 43 times for 228 yards and two scores.
Bozeman had a TD run of 8 yards in the first quarter, and Paiva’s 2-yard TD run gave Chaffey a 21-18 lead.
Corey Cabriales had game highs in receptions (8) and receiving yards (140).
Harrison caught three passes for 101 yards and two TDs.
Joseph Ruiz finished with 45 receiving yards on three catches, including a 17-yard TD from Viramontes.
Damari Heller had a pair of catches for 37 yards.
Nicolas Uscategui Guerra led Chaffey with six tackles.
Josiah Wash, Jeramiah Burchette and Ryan Stewart had four tackles apiece for the Panthers.
Burchette had a pair of sacks.
Up next: The Panthers will travel to PCC in two weeks in the American Championship Bowl game.
In week five, the Lancers defeated the Panthers, 21-19, at PCC.
