Football:
Talk about playoff drama.
St. Francis led their visitors from Muir, 28-21, with just over 30 seconds to play in Friday’s CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinal inside Jim Bonds Stadium.
Staring at a fourth-and-six at the Golden Knights’ 25-yard line, Keyon Mills continued his playoff excellence.
The Mustangs’ quarterback originally looked to pass the ball, but Mills eventually found a lane and pulled MHS to within 28-27 on a 25-yard scramble.
With the clock reading 25 seconds, Muir went all-in for the win.
However, Mills was stopped shy of the goal line, and St. Francis will make its third semifinal round appearance in the last four years.
The Golden Knights fell to LB Poly and Etiwanda in the 2021 and 2022 CIF-SS title games, respectively.
Muir started the season 0-2, and their first win of the season was a 28-18 week-three victory over St. Francis.
The Mustangs entered Friday night’s showdown having won nine consecutive games and a Pacific League championship.
But back to Friday.
Isaac Fajardo rushed for 82 yards on nine carries.
And that included TD runs of 1, 15 and 5 yards.
SFHS quarterback, John Sanders had 182 yards of total offense.
Sanders rushed for 65 yards, and it was his 12-yard TD run that gave St. Francis a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
He also went 13-of-18 for 117 yards.
One week after Mills scored on a fourth-down run in the waning moments of a 22-19 victory over Schurr, the young man wearing No. 7 gave the Mustangs every chance to extend their season.
Mills had TD runs of 29, 1 and 25 yards.
Alijah Parker’s 7-yard TD run with just over a minute info the fourth quarter, and his 2-point conversion pulled MHS even at 21-21.
Parker finished with a game-high 167 yards on 19 carries.
Tim Murphy continues to make massive contributions for SFHS.
Murphy, along with Julian Navarro and Mason Maddox, stopped Mills shy of converting on the late two-point conversion attempt.
Murphy also caught a 22-yard fake punt pass from Shawn Sanders to set up Fajardo’s final TD.
And Murphy’s trifecta was a 12-yard reception from John Sanders on a fourth-and-10 play.
Up next: The Golden Knights will host Murrieta Mesa on Friday at 7.
The Rams (8-4) defeated Northwood, 19-10, in their quarterfinal round contest.
