Covina had won five consecutive games as it entered its week-10 showdown with Chino.

Last season, the Cowboys claimed a 13-point victory over the Colts to secure an outright Sierra League championship.

And on Friday, Chino earned a share of the Hacienda League title with Covina after its 28-21 victory.

The Cowboys scored the game’s first 21 points, and they were able to withstand a second-half Colts charge.

Maximus Barroso tossed a 24-yard TD pass to CJ Gibson, and he scored on a 2-yard run to give Chino a 14-0 lead.

Jair Davis sprinted in from nine yards out with 22 seconds to play in the first half to extend the lead to 21-0.

Covina finally answered, as Jake Duronslet hooked up with Hines Soto on a 39-yard TD pass at the 9:39 mark of the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-7.

However, just over three minutes later, Demetrius Alloway gave the Cowboys a 21-point lead again after his 18-yard TD run.

Duronslet’s 1-yard quarterback-keeper pulled the Colts to within two scores.

With 8:38 to play, the game got close, as Kwame Parrish rumbled in from three yards out.

But Chino was able to hold Covina scoreless down the stretch.

Alloway (16-for-132) and Raymond Chia (18-for-100) combined for 232 yards on 34 carries and one score.

Barroso completed 9-of-15 for 124 yards.

Gibson caught four passes for 45 yards and the one TD.

Luke Prescott had a pair of receptions for 50 yards, and Alejandro Llamas totaled 50 receiving yards on two catches.
