Football:

Covina is now one step closer to an outright Hacienda League championship after Friday’s 40-35 victory over South Hills.

The Colts improved to 8-1, but Jacob Calderon’s Huskies made them work for it.

SHHS made it interesting late, as Tyler Arguinzoni scored on a 1-yard TD run with less than a minute to play.

The Huskies had pulled to within five points of the Colts.

However, South Hills was unable to recover the onside kick, and that allowed Covina to bleed the clock dry.

Jake Duronslet or JD1, led CHS to its 32nd win as the Colts signal caller.

Duronslet completed 8-of-13 for 154 yards, including a 41-yard TD to pass to Kevin Perez.

The program’s all-time leading passer also used his legs, carrying the ball seven times for 85 yards and three TDs.

For all intents and purposes, Duronslet’s 34-yard TD run with just over two minutes to play put the game out of reach.

CHS rushed for 249 yards on 22 carries and five scores.

Kwame Parrish carried the ball 22 times for 118 yards and one TD.

Gatsbee Gumban gained 46 yards on six carries, and he scored once.

Hines Soto and Matthew Olivas both had two receptions for 39 yards.

Perez returned from injury to reel in a 41-yard TD catch.

Karsen Ulrich caught a pair of passes for 15 yards.

Matthew Chavez had a 20-yard reception.

The South Hills ground game had a big night.

Anthony Gonzalez led the way with 148 yards on 20 carries and two scores.

Messiah Luter carried the ball 11 times for 126 yards.

And Luter had a 16-yard reception.

Tyler Arguinzoni gained 73 yards on 10 carries.

Arguinzoni found the end zone twice.

Fabian Marez had a rushing TD for the Huskies.

In an odd occurrence, the scoreboard at Covina District Field went off with approximately two minutes to play and the officials had to keep time on the field.

The Huskies might be 4-5, but Jacob Calderon and his staff have made incremental steps forward each season, and they’re on the cusp of big things in the future.
