Football:
Rio Hondo Prep secured a Gold Coast League championship on Friday night at Kare Park.
RHP had an insane 469-1 advantage on the ground, which also translated into a 30-18 edge in the time of possession battle.
The Kares had leads of 21-0 and 42-6 before the Eagles scored a pair of late TDs.
Noah Penunuri and Nate Curtis finally got their share of carries, and they made the most of it.
Curtis finished with 110 yards on eight carries, and that included TD runs of 15, 8 and 34 yards.
Penunuri had a game-high 165 yards on 15 carries.
And he scored on TD runs of 20 and 8 yards.
Christian Lee’s 18-yard TD run with 1:16 left in the third quarter capped the offensive output for RHP.
Caeden Holcomb rushed for 68 yards on seven carries.
Lee finished with 46 yards on four carries.
Adrian Mendoza (2-for-36) and Nathaniel Shine (4-for-26) combined to carry the ball six times for 62 yards.
Brentwood’s Ben Mikail completed 18-of-25 for 211 yards.
Mikail tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Ryder Brownstein, and a 12-yard scoring strike to Dean Pretlow.
Brownstein (4-for-59) and Pretlow (5-for-49) combined for nine receptions for 108 yards and one score each.
Keller Agam had a game-high eight tackles for the Eagles.
Calogero Chico led RHP with five tackles.
Almost everything went well for the Kares, but they surrendered another long kickoff return for a score.
This time, it was an 80-yard kickoff return by Kruz Jackson that pulled Brentwood to within 42-14 of the boys from that little school in Arcadia.
And one would believe that RHP coach Mark Carson will address the matter during the next two weeks while preparing for the playoffs.
Up next: The Kares will have a week-10 bye, and they’ll get their playoff opponent one week from Sunday.
