Northview secured at least a share of the Valle Vista League championship on Thursday evening.

The Vikings claimed a 34-17 victory over their visitors from West Covina at CDF.

Before we get to NHS, though, Mike Maggiore, his staff and their players fought tooth and nail until the very end.

WCHS entered the game without 13 of their starters, and they were listed as a 42-point underdog according to Calpreps, the website that CIF-SS uses to formulate the first-round playoff pairings.

And there was every reason to think that might be the case when Isaiah Lucero took the opening kickoff 99 yards to paydirt.

The Bulldogs led 14-13 at one point, but the well-coached and talented Vikings wore them down in the end.

Lucero play a monster role in the win.

Along with the KO return, Lucero also caught a 10-yard TD pass from Erik Jimenez.

And Lucero scored on a 16-yard run.

West Covina’s two TDs came on a Julian Rubio 10-yard run, and their stud, Zander Requena found his way into the end zone from 16 yards out.

Requena totaled 132 rushing yards.

Isaiah Rodriguez booted a 29-yard field goal to account for the other WCHS points.

Keanu Tauvao, easily one of the best running backs in the SGV, rushed for 103 yards.

Tauvao had TD runs of 10 and 16 yards.

Lucero finished with seven receptions for 84 yards.
