Boys Water Polo:
It’s a tad bit confusing and complicated, but here goes.
Damien went 5-0 in Baseline League matches during the regular season.
After each league contest had been played, a carousel playoff tournament officially decides the outright Baseline League champions.
Damien actually lost in the first round of pool play.
Chino Hills knocked them off by a score of 7-5.
But DHS would secure a 15-4 victory over Los Osos.
And LOHS helped the Damien cause when they handed CHHS an 11-10 setback.
The tournament’s formula set up another DHS-RCHS match up.
Nine days prior, Damien edged Rancho Cucamonga, 10-9, at RCHS, in the fifth of five regular season Baseline League games.
Fast forward to Thursday, and the Spartans claimed yet another one-goal (9-8) victory over the Cougars to clinch an outright Baseline League championship.
It’s Damien’s third consecutive league crown.
Jonah Aguilera led the offense with three goals, three assists and a pair of steals.
Lucas Gebhart, Zack Montoya, Riah Verduzco-Murphy, Sebastian Maccalla, Jack Hannan and Mikey Ries scored one goal apiece in the win.
Kei Romo had another big-time effort in goal against the Cougars.
Back on October 8th, Romo had 11 saves and five steals.
Yesterday, Romo finished with 12 saves and a pair of steals.
Up next: Damien hosts San Marcos tonight and Poly on Monday before getting their CIF-SS first-round playoff opponent.
DHS went 7-1 in eight Baseline League matches.
